Marine Mammal Contest Results!
Its time for the results of my big marine mammal contest! I started this back before I went into the field and after looking at all the lovely entries my lab friends and I have finally chosen the winners. It was really tough as there were so many great photos and artworks, but we had to choose winners in the end so here they are! There was a slight change of plan though, there weren't anywhere near as many entries as last time so instead of having 'best of... odontocetes/mysticetes/etc' there are third places for both the artwork and photography categories.

Mini-Contest v.17 - Dwarf Sperm Whale is OVER
OH NOES
For the first time in a long time we've had no entries to the mini contest! So the poor Dwarf Sperm Whale will have to suffer being drawn by yours truely. Both the Pygmy and Dwarf sperm whale sheets should be up by the end of the week with any luck
Mini-Contest v.18 - Sperm Whale
Our next species (reverse alphabetically) is the Sperm Whale, the largest of all the odontocetes! These magnificent creatures are huge and dive to incredible depths pursuing their prey, giant squid.
Photograph entries
You can enter up to three photos of anything related to the species, but preference will go to photos showing the identifying features of the species (again side veiws to see colouration, beak and dorsal fin shape) or photos showing common or amazing behaviours. The winners will receive 20 points per photo, and the same person can win multiple times (a total of 60 points!)
Art entry
the drawing must show an anatomically correct version of the species, preferably from the side to see the markings and beak/dorsal shape. The drawing may have multiple viewpoints of the species, or show common behaviours of the speices, but the bare minimum is the side view. The pose can be dynamic, and it can be either an existing deviation or a new one made for this contest.
We will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd place providing enough people enter of course.
1st place - 60 points
2nd place - 30 points
3rd place - 10 points
Once again, check out the rules here exp-marine-mammals.deviantart.… and comment on THIS journal to enter!
The deadline for Sperm whale entries is midnight, 29th January 2012.

July - group on hold while I finish my PhD =)
:star: Sorry guys! :star:
Hey everyone!
So I have completely lost any and all free time in my life. I am 2-3 months from handing in my PhD thesis on seals and yeah, that monumental task is literally taking all of my time.
So until I post another journal saying that I am back to run the group properly, I'm sorry to say that there will be no journals or updates and acceptance times on submissions will be longer than they have been previously, as I am not able to log onto DA daily anymore to check submissions. I appologise that some submissions have expired, if this happens to you please re-submit the image so I can accept it when I do get on
March v.2 Changes in Group Journals and Contests
:star: Mini-Contest v.42 - Northern Right Whale :star:
The Northern Right Whale Contest is over and we did not have any suitable images entered =( I've also got fairly behind on writing the sheets for the species we have covered, that's five now I think that I need to make?! And two where I will have to draw the artwork myself, so I am going to halt the mini contests until I am caught up again. Appologies for this but as I have mentioned many times before, my PhD is eating into my free time right now and I have to limit/reduce my online time.
If you are interested in entering the next mini contest and want to get a head start on your entry
